Having a thankful heart turns our eyes off our situation unto Jesus. We can all be thankful for so many past blessings in our lives. One of the best ways to do spiritual warfare is to focus on the goodness of God instead of our own situations because whatever we focus on gets bigger.

If we focus on our problems, it is our problems that will get bigger, but if we focus on God … we will enlarge our vision of God. The Philosopher Blaise Pascal once said, “God made man in His own image, and man returned the compliment”. We do not want to put God in a box; we want to catch a glimpse of the Big, Big, and Generous God who loves us so much that He gave everything He had for us, even His own Divine Son upon the Cross to purchase our salvation and adoption.

We have lots to be thankful to God for! We can be thankful that we are in relationship with God and that we are free from ‘religion’, trying to please God out of duty, we can thank God for the people we have in our lives, that we have a roof over our heads, we are warm, we have food, we have hot and cold running water, we live in a country that is experiencing peace …etc.

I pray that we may all develop thankful hearts, that we may all keep our eyes on Jesus instead of our circumstances, that we may remember God’s goodness and generosity in our personal life always, and that we in turn may have generous hearts towards God and others.

  1. What are the benefits of a thankful heart?
  2. Why is it not a good idea to focus on our problems?
  3. Can you think of things that you can personally be thankful to God for?
