We believe in one God who is represented by three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. And God made man in His own image… (Genesis 1:26-27)

So are we a three part being. We have a Soul (which consists of our mind, our will and our emotions), we have a Body, and we have a Spirit.

We were made a three part being: Spirit, Soul and Body. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 says:

“May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Spirit-Soul-Body (Concentric)

We know that we are more than a body, because if we were to lose a limb, we would not be less of a person. The spirit part is our new nature, where we are able to worship God in spirit and in truth, but our soul and body are our old nature. We can not change our old nature, but we can die to our old nature by renewing our mind.

We no longer have to follow our feelings, and can replace old thinking with our new thinking by renewing our mind in the Word of God, and the leading of the Holy Spirit guiding our spirit.

Spirit-Soul-Body (Train)

God secured our spirit for all eternity at the time we were born again (Ephesians 1:13-14 NIV). We already belong to God in our spirit for all eternity now.

When we were born into this world we were lost, as we inherited the separation from God that was caused by Adam and Eve disobeying God. Therefore we were weak and easily tempted to do wrong.

Diagram 3

To break this separation we needed someone stronger than us to be pure for us, to break this separation from God.

So God, in His goodness and His love sent Jesus to earth and God “shrank His Kid”.

In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit only came to certain people who had favour with God, but in the New Testament, through Jesus, the Holy Spirit has been made available to all of us who ask.

In the old man we could not buy righteousness through being good, this was humanly impossible because the more we tried, the more we failed. Our spirit was born with a sinful nature.

In the new man, our new born again spirit can not be condemned because we are a new creation, sealed (vacuum packed): Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! (NIV 2Cor 5:17). God gave us Jesus, so that we may enter back into relationship with Him now as well as for all eternity.

Though our mind and our body may draw us into sin, it will not change our new nature. We are saved once and for all by grace through faith.

Now that we have a new nature, if we are filled with the Spirit, we have new desires. We have a new want to on the inside of us which is the proof that we are born again, and our life is being transformed to reflect Jesus’ life. We no longer do things because we have to, but because we love God and we want to give freely as He gave us freely.

The victorious life comes through knowing God is good and trusting Him to change us and empower us to live for His glory.

No pain is wasted in God’s Kingdom: He promises to work everything out for good for us who believe (Rom 8:28 NLT)

It is in dying to our own ego that we discover our true purpose in Christ and we become truly alive (Gal 2:20 NLT)
